JOHN THE BAPTIST BAPTIZES JESUS

I know several denominations don’t subscribe to the ‘Trinity’ belief system, but the baptism is the only place where you can point to three distinct personages, Jesus in the water, God speaking from Heaven and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove..........

Don't know about it being the only place (although nothing else comes to mind at this still-waking-up moment), but it is certainly a distinctive statement of the Trinity.

Beautiful paintings even if the baptism is mostly not depicted by immersion. Favorites #6 by Ghiberti; the mosaics at #7/8; Greg Olson at #10. Leonardo’s contribution to the Verrocchio paintings at #27 is the angel at right. Leonardo trained in the studio of Verrocchio. This is a tempera painting but Leonardo chose oils for his angel, which at the time was a new medium. One can already see the mastery of Leonardo. The historian Vasari commented: “Verrocchio had already done the main work. Leonardo painted an angel who was holding some garments; and despite his youth, he executed it in such a manner that his angel was far better that the figures painted by Verrocchio. This was the reason why Andrea would never touch colors again, he was so ashamed that a boy understood their use better than he did.”

#22’s artist, Carl Bloch, has become a favorite of mine. I always enjoy his take and appreciate his execution. I think if I were an artist, I could do a lot worse than to be likened to him.
